You must be 15 1/2 years old to get a drivers permit at the California DMV. However, you may take the classroom driver ed course before that time. It is actually a pretty good idea to get it done early, so you can get the permit at 15 1/2, hold it for the required 6 months, and then get a license at 16.
Do I need a classroom driver ed course if I am 18?
It is not requred by DMV if you are over 18. It is a good idea to take it for safety reasons. Also, it may earn you some big discounts on insurance coverage, depending on your policy.
What is the process for teenagers?
Take a driver education course
Enroll in a behind the wheel driving school (we give you an enrollment form showing this)
Take the written test at DMV for a permit
Take your first driving lesson
Practice with parents (50 hours total, 10 of those at night)
Finish your 6 hours of lessons (approximately 1 lesson per month, with practice time in between)
Hold your permit 6 months
Take a behind the wheel test for your license
Please feel free to call or email with any questions at all. We are glad to help!
