To get a Driving Permit

  • Schedule the DMV written test for permit
  • DMV will issue an "Adult Permit"

What to bring to DMV Appointment

  • Confirmation Number for filling out DL44 online application form
  • 2 forms of Proof of Residency (i.e. SMUD, PG&E bill, insurance, registration, etc.)
  • Original Birth Certificate

To Get a Driver's License

Requirements

  • When practice driving, passenger must be over the age of 18 and must have a valid driver license
  • No minimum requirement for any number of lessons or any amount of practice time
  • A Behind the Wheel "driver test" is required, so an appointment must be made with DMV for the date and time (online at www.dmv.ca.gov or call 800-777-0133)

What to bring to DMV Appointment

  • Legal and safe vehicle
  • Proof of current registration on the vehicle
  • Proof of insurance on the vehicle
  • A licensed driver over 18
